Encouragement

"Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification." Romans 14:19

They were having lots of problems between Believers in this church.

Edification: an act of edifying; moral improvement; to instruct or benefit, especiall morally, spiritually, Uplift.

Encouragement: process of uplifting people. We need to encourage each other.

Be patient and gentle with those who aren't there yet.

En=Add Encourage = add courage to someone.  People often discourage others. If they are living without God they will lah out. Jesus does everything to build us up.

"Therefore encourage one another
 and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." 1 Thessalonians 5;11

Keep doing it. Growing needs encouragement. We need to encourage each other.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

It is a gift to be free from anxiety. This is only possible through Christ. 

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:8-9

The church was praying when Saul was hunting them. And God transformed Sault to become Paul. Lift up those who hurt us.

"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The world's weapons are to attack. The world loves the carwrecks of other people's lives. This isn't God's way! It shouldn't be our way. Our human nature wants to do things the world's ways.

"You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[a]? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written:
“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[b]
12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God." Romans 14:10-12

Stop comparing outselves. No gossip. No backbiting.

"Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification." Romans 14:19

Fasting and Prayer

Food is important -- focal point in our brains!! To the modern person fasting is a novelty. We don't think about it much.

Fasting=voluntary withdrawing from food/drik or other fleshly appetites for a specified period of time. 

Fasting has to include prayer.

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
    and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
    and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
    and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter--
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
    and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
    and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[a] will go before you,
    and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard." Isaiah 58:6-8

3 kinds of fasting:
1. Normal food fast.

 "Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil.
 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry." Matthew 4:1-2

 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full." Matthew 6:16

2. Partial Fast -- omit certain foods.
Daniel, Elijah and John Wesley are examples of people who did this.

3. Absolute Fast -- nothing. 

"Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments." Exodus 34:28

This was a miracle Moses survived without water that long. Don't do this!

Why Fast? (see Isaiah 58:6-8 which is quoted above)

1. Free from addictions (Yoke)
      Solve problems (injustice)
     Revival (oppressed)

You take that time and money that you would on those meals and spend it with God.

2. Help provide for others (again, see the Isaiah passage)
3. Healing, testimony protection glory of the LORD.


"Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:19-21

Benefits of Fasting

Focus and more time for prayer.

Intent -- more attentive to God.

Demonstration of seriousness..

What Fasting is NOT:

It isn't a bargaining tool with God. It is not meant as manipulation; fasting is for ourr benefit, not His.

Not to immpress others.

Not for pride reasons.


Shouldn't get legalistic.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." galatians 5:1

"When you fast"  Jesus expected we would fast. Should be part of our prayer life.

Always Be Ready

 "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander." 1 Peter 3:15-16

When we are dealing with the world we should be ready to defend our faith. 

Provide evidence-based defense.

What is stopping us from us being ready?


A. Fear of Confrontation. There is so much fear of offense and tolerance accepted (accept for Truth) that no one says anything. We can speak with truth with gentlness, respect and compassion. People need to hear the truth.

"So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!" 2 Corinthians 5:16-17

B. Fear of Inadequacy. Be ready. Know the Word -- just like Jesus, use the Word of God.

"He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?" Matthew 12:3

"Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent?" Matthew 12:5


"Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes’[a]?" Matthew 21:42

Jesus used Scripture to defend  His position, His choices, His faith.


"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

We hav been given much. We need to use it rightly.

C. Vulnerability of Ignorance. 


"For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many." Matthew 24:5

D. Be Doers.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do." James 1:22-25

E. Read The Word.

"Keep this Book of the Law
 always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.' Joshua 1:8

"Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near." Revelation 1:3

It's not enough to just hear. You need to meditate on it and do it, put it into practice. Let it become a part of you. If there's no depth to your faith, it will fail.

"They have ears, but cannot hear,

    noses, but cannot smell." Psalm 115:6

"Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’
 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’" Matthew 7:22-23

F. Be Ready


"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13

"Resist him,
 standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings." 1 Peter 5:9

"Therefore put on the full armor of God,
 so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Ephesians 6:13

Be ready. Know what's in the Word!!
