Passover

First blood sacrifice in the Bible happened in Genesis 3:

21 "The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them." Genesis 3:21

And then in the end:
"13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”
14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”
And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." Revelation 7:13-14

I. The Lamb was needed.

Blood on the doorway -- Everyone needed to be covered by the blood because everyone has sinned. The angel of death was coming. If you don't follow through with God's commands of putting blood on the door, your child would die.

"3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”"
John 3:3

II. The Lamb is chosen.

The lamb was chosen on day 10 (see Exodus 12) and taken home and not sacrificed till day 14. Kids probably got quite attached.

8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.[a]" revelation 13:8

4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[a]" Galatians 4:4-5

God sent Jesus at the perfect time. The Romans were in charge and built roads everywhere. There was a common language -- Greek. The language, the roads were all there so the gospel could be spread! Fullness of God's time!!

III. The Lamb was watched.

the kids would watch the lamb these four days. The people and the Pharisees watched Jesus.

4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[a]" Luke 6:7

IV. The Lamb is slaughtered.

Jesus was chosen. His purpose was to die, to be the sacrifice for all sin. A blood sacrifice. His blood is on all our hands.

23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross." Acts 2:23

IV. Blood applied.

Killing the lamb was not enough. The blood had to be applied to the door frame -- above, right and left and below. Just like the cross: the crown of thorns, the nails on the right, the left and below. Jesus is the Door to Heaven.

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture." John 10:7-9

The blood had to be applied by faith. Used hyssop to apply it -- everyone had to do it. Hyssop was a common shrub. All had to pick some to apply the blood. Leveled the playing field.

V. The Lamb was eaten.

The lamb had to be eaten by the family. We have to ingest Jesus's flesh and blood. He is the bread from heaven. He has to be part of us. Blood=salvation Flesh=regeneration.

"Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." John 6:53

Eaten with the Lamb was bitter herbs which represented Egypt and slavery. Bread without yeast -- hurry!

7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

You had to be dressed and ready.

Are you ready?

The LORD's supper:

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” John 6:53-58

Living a Life of Adventure

"As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him." Matthew 4:18-22

Life with Jesus is meant to be an adventure. Do you see -- James and John dropped everything and followed Jesus.

How do you just let go of everything and follow Jesus? How do you just let go of the life you were living? You change your perspective. Jesus didn't push or prod them to come --  no manipulation. Gave the invitation and moved on.

Chosen by Jesus -- I chose you for a purpose.

"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you." John 15:16

"He has saved
us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time," 2 Timothy 1:9

You were created new for a purpose

"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved." Ephesians 2:1-5

We are meant for more than the rest of the world is. Let the World discover Jesus through you.

Jesus is a revolutionary -- What if it is not like what you think it will be? Don't limp across the finish line -- skid over it.

New for a purpose!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!" 2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-21

We are called to be conquerors, no matter the challenge.

"His divine power
has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." 2 Peter 1:3

God will take care of us. Everything we need will be given to us to do what He has called us to do.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.
In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

We overcome the world.

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

Make something of our lives for Him.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Be who He called you to be.

We have been given a guide -- don't go where you don't know without a reliable guide.

"In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the Lord establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9

What are you waiting for?

"Fight the good fight
of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses." 1 Timothy 6:12

In The Beginning

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."
John 1:1-3

Shannon shares a story about a broken pipe organ -- really good story (need to listen to the first part of the sermon to hear it. I wasn't able to take notes today due to me (Jane) forgetting the tripod! So what is in this post are Shannon's sermon slides)

In The beginning was the Word:

Word in Greek = Logos

Definition – Word, Thought, or divine order that rules the universe

Jesus existed before existence
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

“the Word” is eternal, uncreated, present before the beginning:

Psalm 90: 1-2
A prayer of Moses the man of God.
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place
    throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

In the Beginning:

Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

John 20:31
But these are written that you may believe[a] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

The Word was with God:

Trinity = Tri- unity
Jesus was not separate from God – Jesus was and is God.

Water = liquid, ice and steam         Not 1+1+1 = 3 but 1x1x1=1

One of the mysteries of God that we only partly understand, but we need to fully believe.
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

1 Corinthians 8:6
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

God is God
Jesus is God
Spirit is God

Unless Jesus is God all salvation falls away.

The Word was God:

John ties it all together – we see the fullness of God in Jesus

Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe

John 5:18
For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 8:58
“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 10:30
I and the Father are one.”

John 14:9
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’

What Jesus was not:

Jesus was not created
Jesus was not an angel

Jesus was not just a good teacher
Jesus was not just a prophet

Jesus was not fictional
Jesus was not just a moral man

Jesus is God application:

Colossians 1:17
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together

Trust in Jesus   - Creator of the universe
  - died for our sins
  - through Him we are forgiven
  - through Him we have abundant life
  - He is preparing heaven for us
  - He taught us for our own good

Only the original creator could ever fix what was broken!

Controlling Anger

3/7/2021

"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." James 1:19-20

The world is going to ward anger and name calling. in fact it is celebrating anger.

"Emotions are actually more contagious than the flu." Dr. Daniel Goldman

Anger started way back with Cain and Abel.

"Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;

do not fret—it leads only to evil." Psalm 37:8

"because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." James 1:20

Is anger always wrong? No.

“In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry," Ephesians 4:26

Righteous anger vs. self-righteous anger:

256 bible verses on God's righteous anger (always dealing with sin, suffering or disobedience)

Human anger has stages
1. mild irritation
2. provoked frustration (these two stay in the thoughts -- they have to change in the  thoughts)
3. Personal indignation -- comes out in speech
4. Uncontrolled rage -- action

People express anger in different ways -- none are good: gossip, sarcasm, cussing, stonewalling,
How do we stop ourselves before reacting badly?

"The words of the reckless pierce like swords,

but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Proverbs 12:18

We have to control what comes out of us.

"Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;

do not fret—it leads only to evil." Psalm 37:8

20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." James 1:20

We bank our anger -- store it up. it festers there. DON"T DO THIS!!

Anger damages people. Relationships.

Jesus called it RACA -- lashing out in anger.

"An angry person stirs up conflict,

and a hot-tempered person commits many sins." Proverbs 29:22

"A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict,

but the one who is patient calms a quarrel." Proverbs 15:18

Take time to think before we react. What does your "idiot light" tell you?

Fear, fatigue, frustration, regret and shame; hurt. These all can cause angry outbursts. Give others grace. Why are they angry?

Own it -- If you are part of a conflict, you have a part in the conflict no matter how minor. Own that part you are part of -- take responsibility for it. We are called to be peacemakers.

The world is celebrating anger these days; victimhood; entitlement; it's all about victimood. Sometimes we have to choose to do right or to be right -- just because you are right doesn't mean you must demand people see you are right. Be silent about being right at times.

Our speech and actions should be intentional.

Jesus's anger -- he didn't take the bait ever. Jesus got angry because God's temple was being run over by thieves. They were hindering the people in their worship. They were making money on other people's need for worship.

"In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.
15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables." John 2:14-15

This was righteous anger. He didn't hurt the people. He just got the junk out so the people could worship. He stayed and healed people afterwards.

SUMMARY:
If you do not control anger anger will control you.
Be in the world but not of it -- don't catch the world's anger.
Stop it before it becomes action.
Choose righteousness over being right. Be the peacemaker.

"Fools give full vent to their rage,

but the wise bring calm in the end." Proverbs 29:11
