The Name Above All Names

"5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
    by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death--
        even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
    and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
    to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:5-11

Of course there are things we shouldn't say in public, but political correctness has been a great destroyer. The name of Jesus is beeped out of shows like The View. 

Why are we afraid to say "Jesus?"

The name of Jesus has Power behind it. Stifling the name of Jesus is nothing new.


"40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name." Acts 5:40-41

For the Name, in the Name....here is the power.

What is the big deal about saying the name of Jesus? Are we as a church afraid to say Jesus?

Every miracle in the New Testament was done by Jesus or in His Name.

"4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong." Acts 3:4-7




The Name of Jesus is the only way to Salvation.

"12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

"38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2:38

You have have the ability to change someone's eternal destination if you speak the name of Jesus to them!

Jesus is present with us when we gather in His name.


"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20

"36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,
 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Mark 9:36-37

Persecution will come because of His Name.


12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name." Luke 21:12

His name was outlawed (and very likely one day it will be in America...). 

"20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me." John 15:20-21

We are called to preach in the name of Jesus.


"45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." Luke 24:45-47

If we aren't using His name, we are powerless.

We are called to heal in the name of Jesus.


"17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”" Mark 16:17-18

Worried what others will think, political correctness and nonbelief keep us from seeing people healed.

Why is there power in the name of Jesus?

It represents all Jesus is and all He stands for.


43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Acts 10:43

If Christ is in us, we can speak His name and we are not alone!


34 “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and roll up your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up." Acts 9:34

The power of the name of Jesus over hell.


17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” Luke 10:17

Only if we believe...

"13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”
 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding." Acts 19:13-16

Jesus is not a magic word. You must believe.

We have been given Power of Attorney in the name of Jesus.

Use the name of Jesus to light the fire!

The church is supposed to be a place and people of power!

Abraham and Isaac and the wood and the fire. They needed the lamb.

Today's church has the lamb and the wood. We don't always have the fire.

SPEAK HIS NAME -- JESUS!

What's in a Name?

Names! They are so important. Sometimes they honor people. Sometimes they are chosen for their meanings. Sometimes parents choose them for how they sound.

English is a very efficient language -- uses the same word for a multiple of meanings. It is subject based. Hebrew is action based. For Example the word LOVE in Hebrew as four meanings, four different words. In The King James Bible it was translated from Hebrews to Greek to Latin to English. Lots gets lost in translation. We miss some of the nuances of the original language.

The names God was named were based in what He did -- His actions. We need to learn and understand His different names to understand God. We get to know Him better through His actions.

Knowing the names of God allows us to identify the attributes of God. Following is a very Incomplete list of God's names:

1. YHWH -- Yahweh = the Eternal One, the "I AM"' the Beginning and the End; Always. This is the sacred name of God. It means The Lord. Used 6519 times in the Bible. Often replaced by Jehovah (which is Latin for Yahweh). 

2. Adonai -- this is the plural form of Adon. Meaning Lord and Master (plural). Used 434 times in the Bible, 200 in Ezekiel alone. 

3. Jehova Rapha -- The Lord who heals.


"He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”" Exodus 15:26

4. Jehova Shammah -- The Lord is here. The Lord is there. The Lord who is present with me NOW.


“The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits.[a]
“And the name of the city from that time on will be:
the Lord is there.” Ezekiel 48:35

"The Lord is there" is another name for Jerusalem.

5. Jehovah Tsikenu -- The Lord our Righteousness


"In his days Judah will be saved
    and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior." Jeremiah 23:6

El = God. But it is never used by itself.

6. El Olam -- Everlasting God, Eternal One; Ancient of Days

7. Elohim -- The Creator and the Judge (used 2000 times in the Old Testament). Both applied at the same time.

8. Jehova Jireh -- The Lord Who Provides.

9. Jehova Raah -- The Lord our Shepherd.

Believing without Seeing and Getting Closer to God -- these 2 things are our Faith.

Salvation is just the beginning of our faith!! It is the beginning of getting to know God intimately. He's a many faceted God. 

10. Jehova Mekoodishken -- The Lord Who Sanctifies You.

11. El Shaddai -- The Lord God Almighty. The God above all gods; The Warrior God.

12. El Elyon -- Most High God.

The LORD is my shepherd (Jehovah Roi) - The great Shepherd of the sheep
I shall not want. (Jehovah Jireh) - Our provider!
He makes me lie down in green pastures Again Jehovah Jireh, our provider. And (Jehovah Shalom) - Our peace.
He leads me beside quiet waters. Definitely Jehovah Shalom - Peace!
He restores my soul (Jehovah Rapha) - Our healer and restorer
He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake (Jehovah Tsidkenu) - Our righteousness
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil Again, Jehovah Shalom - Peace instead of fear in difficult times
For You are with me (Jehovah Shammah) - He who is there present with us
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me Jehovah Shalom - Peace
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies (Jehovah Nissi)  - Our victor and banner
You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows (Jehovah Jireh) - Our provider
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life.
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Finally - In HIS presence for all time - (Jehovah Shammah) - The One who is present and there with His people!


13. Jehova Ezar -- The Lord my help.

14. Jehova Kaddash -- The Lord My Holiness.

15. Jehova Manah -- The Lord my portion.

16. Jehova Chelek -- The Lord my inheritance.

There is power in the name of the Lord!

When He comes back He will have a new name!! Maybe it will means "He's back!"

"35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”"
                                                                                                                                                   Mark 4:35-41

The disciples had been around for several miracles -- they saw the amazing catch of fish; the healing of lepers, the healing of the man who couldn't walk. Yet, none of them affected them like the storm did. Why? This miracle was a defining moment because it was personal for them! They experienced it -- both sides of it: the fear and the miracle. Prior to this miracle they were just spectators. 

Picture the scene: 
--Jesus was tired and sleeping.
--The storms on the seas of Galilee are known to be fierce. This one was called a squall -- same word that is used for hurricane.
--Several of the disciples were seasoned fisherman. This was their home turf, the place where they were probably most comfortable. And they were scared.
-- They woke Jesus up with an accusation.
-- Jesus "muzzled" the wind.
--And then the disciples are said to have been "terrified" of Jesus. 

Defining Moments in our lives:

Fear is an emotion -- instinctive, visceral; even animals experience it. 

Faith -- control over emotions, indwelling and knowledge of the power of God.

Jesus doesn't say we will not experience storms. The question is: how will we respond? In faith or in fear?

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
    he delivered me from all my fears." Psalm 34:4

1. Seek the Lord for His deliverance.

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34

2. Jesus lived daily. We are to live this way too.  God has the future covered. Live for today.. And God for enough for today. Count on God to provide.


"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”" Joshua 1:9

3. Don't be afraid. Be strong. Be courageous.

The world is going to get harder and harder to live in for Christians. Be prepared. We are to be fearless, strong, courageous, loving. Never worry or fret. worrying and fretting are the world's ways/.

Out on the ocean away from any land sighting -- that is following Jesus. 

"For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
                                                                                                                                                   2 Timothy 1:6-7

4. Fan the flame of the Spirit within you.


Gotta add air to the fire. The Spirit gives us power, love and self discipline. Fan those flames!

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." 1 John 4:18

Love and fear cannot coexist. God's love, not the world's, conquers fear. It cost so much to love us. 

People hurt and disappoint.

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

What is left to fear? Nothing. God will not allow you to be snatched from His hands. He says don't worry. He'll take care of it.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.
 I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27

The above verse was said right before Jesus was killed.  There is no defense, apart from Jesus, for sin. As Jesus went to the cross, Jesus gave us His peace. 

In Those Defining moments:


1. Seek God.
2. Commune with Him daily.
3. Be strong and courageous.
4. Fan the flames of the Spirit.
5. Dwell in love.
6. Remember who you belong to.
7. Accept and reflect the peace of Christ.

Get the Spirit flowing. Be known as a person of peace. Be the one who faces the threat. God's got this. We stand behind Him.

Ready or not, Here He Comes!

​“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert[a]! You do not know when that time will come." Mark 13:32-33

Be ready when Jesus returns.

"51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed--
 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed." 1 Corinthians 15:51-52

If this is my last chance, the time is now. None of us know when today is our last day,

"4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober." 1 Thessalonians 5:4-6

Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Time in our lives is more like a stopwatch rather than a clock. Your life will stop suddenly. Are you ready?

If you knew this was your last week what would you do? Reconcile with those you love. Forgive. Tell people the gospel. 

So, what is getting in the way now? Do these things now. Don't waste a second. Where you spend your time shows what matters to you. Don't have regrets. Use your time for Jesus. Don't waste a second.

Faithfulness

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

Once we let God into our lives, He won't let us go.

Faithfulness: 1. remaining loyal and steadfast 2. true to the facts or original 

Hebrew word for faithfulness = EMUN ....similar to Amen! Which means "So be it" or "yes!"

"Know therefore that the 
Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments." Deuteronomy 7:9

"For the word of the Lord is right and true;

    he is faithful in all he does." Psalm 33:4

Being steadfast and consistent -- a steady and consistent love. God never forgets how much He loves us. We are called to this kind of faithfulness.


“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." Luke 16:10

Your faith is your faith.

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Matthew 25:21

We're called to be that kind of servant -- the good and faithful servant. A lot of people's decision to accept Jesus depends on our faith. We are called to have a visible faith -- the kind of faith that shines; a visible, consistent faith.


"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. 4 By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead." Hebrews 11:1-4

The entire chapter of Hebrews 11 tells of people who had great faith. 

All creatures and demons believe in God. That isn't enough. We are to be in a relationship with God. Faithfulness happens in a relationship.

God's faithfulness to us

"No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." 1 Corinthians 10:13

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

People forget that God is working right now! Active and working every moment!

"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,

    for his compassions never fail.
 They are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23

God models faithfulness in all He does.


"God is not human, that he should lie,
    not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
    Does he promise and not fulfill?" Numbers 23:19

God's faithfulness is so much deeper than ours ever can be.


"if we are faithless,

    he remains faithful,
    for he cannot disown himself." 2 Timothy 2:13

The Lord appeared to us in the past,[a] saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;

    I have drawn you with unfailing kindness." Jeremiah 31:3

You gotta work at your relationship with God.

What is our part in this relationship?


"Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful." 1 Corinthians 4:2

Return God's love to Him.

"So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good." 1 Peter 4:19

God will help us be faithful.

Even when life stinks, be faithful.


"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23

Draw near and I will fill your cup.


"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:23

How would you measure your faithfulness to God?
How would God measure your faithfulness?




"You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. 4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place." Revelation 2:3-5

Embrace your first love! Jesus Christ!
