The Gift of Grace

7/30/2017

All kids want is the box not the gift. They miss the point of how hard their parents worked at picking the perfect gift. Sometimes we are like that with God's gift of Grace. We play with the box and don't actually live in God's grace.
"And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain-- 2 for He says,
“At the acceptable time I listened to you,
And on the day of salvation I helped you.”
Behold, now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is “the day of salvation”—" 2 Corinthians 6:1-2

He's talking to Believers here. Why did Paul have to remind believers that it was the day of salvation? Not to receive the grace of God in vain?

Don't forget the time is now. We often deny the grace that is available to us. We operate in our own strength rather than God's.

"20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." 2 Corinthians 5:20-21

We are Christ's ambassadors. God wanted to give us grace but couldn't through the Law.

Jesus opened the door. Just walk through.

All eyes are on us. People are looking at us. Is Christ worthwhile? they wonder (while looking at us).

Through grace we can fulfill this role. God wants us to be His ambassadors.

Grace is the fullness of life.

We were saved. We are being saved (a building process -- santification) and we will be saved (glorification -- in  heaven).

"And the Word became flesh, and [a]dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of [b]the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14

Jesus was (and is) full of grace and truth. We can be too through Christ. We need to be full of grace for others and for ourselves.

"6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so [a]walk in Him,7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established [b]in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing [c]with gratitude.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, [d]rather than according to Christ.9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made [e]complete, and He is the head [f]over all rule and authority;" Colossians 2:6-10

Don't let anything separate you from the truth of Christ.  We are taking on a burden we weren't meant to have if we go after the world's philosophies. Those things that tell us we must do _____ to be good enough.

What does it tell those who are watching us if we aren't praising God? What does it say if we are grumpy all the time? What does it say if people hear us gossiping?

Live in Grace.

They know how to land on the net. They gotta learn how to land on Jesus.

Get back to work.

1 Peter 5:

Come to God humbly.  Recognize who God is and recognize who you really are.

The world doesn't teach us to be humble. The world teaches us to be prideful.  Grace is sufficient. We need to be humble.

Do I ask for forgiveness when I haven't given it?

Do I have a lack of grace toward others?

When we go to God is it in ritual or humility?

"10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, is to do so [a]as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving [b]by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen."
1 Peter 4:10-11

Use your gifts to serve others as stewards of God's grace. Faithful steward of God's grace.

I'm here for the glory of God.  He's going to try and muffle you (satan that is).

Be enveloped in God's grace. We have to be real in the way we walk and talk.

They don't need to see perfect. They need to see restored.  Tell them about the grace you've been given.

Paid in Full

Jesus paid it all.

Lev 17:11 -- Blood sacrifice is needed.

Separation in the garden.

All the Old Testament Sacrifices were temporary. They were never enough. Like Bailing out a boat.

Concept of continual sacrifice.

You'll never catch up.

How much unfinished busienss do you have?

Legacy

Unpaid bills.

Relationships

Do you have regrets?

Unfinished business, greatest worry often.

Always something to do. When Jesus died on the Cross it was finished (as He said).

Accomplished....finished as in the end of a race.  It's a not a survival thing. It's a completion.

There's no longer a need for temporary atonement.

"Jesus paid it all.
All to Him I Owe.
Sin has left a crimson strain
He washed me white as snow."

1. Everything was thrown at Him -- Satan and sin threw it all and Him and He was victorious over all.

2. Suffering was finished.

3. Prophecies fulfilled.

4. Law fulfilled.  Romans 10:4

5. Price of Sin Paid in Full.
Hebrews 10:11-14
He paid it all.

The fountain of grace always flows.

Foundation of peace and relationship has been laid. That didn't exist prior to Jesus's sacrifice.  He opened a door that had never been opened before. HE actually made a door and then opened it.

Who said you're supposed to do that?

Turn your guilt into gratefulness.

Just accept His forgiveness.

Give up the self-loathing.

Love one another.

Just accept it. We can't add to it. We can't say it is finished without Jesus.  The only thing that completes us in Him.

It is a gift. Grace is a gift. You aren't qualified. Anything we do to diminish it is on us.

God doesn't look at us and see our imperfections. He looks at us through Jesus and sees perfection and completion.

Romans 12:1-2

The Importance of being in a community

Shannon preached at the Pioneer Hall in Dupree today as part of the Community Service for Pioneer Days. He spoke the importance of being in a community of Believers.

I. We all see God.

“But now ask the beasts, and let them teach you;
And the birds of the heavens, and let them tell you.
 “Or speak to the earth, and let it teach you;
And let the fish of the sea declare to you.
“Who among all these does not know
That the hand of the Lord has done this,
In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And the breath of all mankind?" Job 12:7-10

When you watch a sunset you know God exists.  Every newborn has God's fingerprints. New Birth is a miracle in all its forms.

"The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
Their [a]line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.
In them He has placed a tent for the sun," Psalm 19:1-4

"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." Romans 1:20

II. We have faith He will keep working. This isn't an easy place to live. We have faith it will be green again in the spring even when it is a drought right now.

III. The Creator wants you.

He wants a personal relationship with you as an individual.

"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who
beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:40

There's not a single person God doesn't want.

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8

We're not good enough. We can't fix it by ourselves. He loves us anyway. You were born ready to accept God. You were born with a need for Jesus Christ. Accept Him now.

The only thing that keeps us from God is our own stubbornness. He did everything He needed to do so we could be with Him. We need more God and less religion. We let religion get in the way of relationship. The most necessary part is relationship with Christ. There is no way to the Father except through Christ. We have to go through Jesus.

1. Recognize God as God.
2. Recognize you as you.
3. Ask Him to enter life.

The most important communities are based on relationships.

There is a legacy of faith in each of us (or we wouldn't be here). There's a need for revival.

Refiner's Fire

Malachi 3:1-4a:  “Behold, I am going to send My [a]messenger, and he will [b]clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; [c]and the [d]messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts. 2 “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like [e]fullers’ soap. 3 He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the Lord [f]offerings in righteousness.4 Then the [g]offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lordas in the days of old and as in former years.

We normally don't think of fire as a blessing.

Yet, fire can be used as a tool.

Every time you heat silver it gets a little more pure. Just a tiny bit of heat makes the silver turn black -- does nothing good for it. And too much heat will ruin the silver. God knows how to apply just enough heat to us to refine us.

Matthew 3:11-12:“As for me, I baptize you [a]with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you [b]with the Holy Spirit and fire.
12 His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Weeds need to be thrown into the fire and burned up -- in real life and in us.

A holy fire. God mentions fire in the Bible 368 times.

God spoke to Moses in a burning bush.

A column of fire led the Israelites at night.

Fire consumes but is also refines.

Acts 2:1-3:  When the day of Pentecost [a]had come, they were all together in one place.
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire [b]distributing themselves, and [c]they [d]rested on each one of them.

Refining in us continues every day. More and more getting rid of the old and becoming the new.  God knows we can't fix ourselves by ourselves. We need Him to do lasting changes.

God refines for a purpose.

1 Peter 1:6-7:  In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various [a]trials,
 7 so that the [b]proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which [c]is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

Rejoice in the process.

Correction, discipline, Don't we discipline them out of love? God does the same thing.

God has to relight our fire sometimes. He's got to kick the coals, restart the flame if He must. We do best when we work with HIm.

"It hurts me more than it hurts you."

Jesus sees the pure silver in the raw material in us. He knows the good that's in there.

It's work to get something shaped out of what you see. It's work to hammer and shape. God is with us all the time. it's a whole lot easier if you work with Him.

Hebrews 12:29, "our God is a consuming fire."

All to develop a deeper relationship with God. We want our children to move in the right direction. God wants the same for us.

It's pure when the craftsman can see his reflection in the precious metal. God wants to see His reflection in us.
