Are You an Easy Target?

8/25/2019

Are you an easy target for the enemy? For the anti-Christ (not meaning Anti-Christ, but any influence that is against Jesus Christ and the whole truth) influences in this world?

We can open ourselves up to becoming easy targets. We may train really hard to be "on point;" to be able to "attack" that our defense slips without us realizing it.

"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron." 1 Timothy 4:1-2

If we aren't actively working and progressing in our faith we are standing still -- we will be an easy target.

The best way to tell a lie is to include a tiny bit of truth with the lie.

Anything can be twisted. When you hear something, some "new" truth, research. Get the background. Come to your own conclusions. Use your brain and your thinking skills you've been blessed with (these too will get stronger the more you use them).

"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves." 2 Peter 2:1

There are ordained ministers who aren't preaching truth. The Word offends because when we are wrong we need to be corrected. And often, we are wrong.

False Teachers have three characteristics according to the above verse:
1. Hypocritical (don't practice what they preach)
2. Liars
3. Seared (burned) conscience. When something is burned that bad all the feelings is burned away.

The only way to hear the Spirit is to listen. You can't pick and choose when it cmoes to what Jesus says. You have to take it all. God is a righteous judge.

Listen to the Spirit, not the person.

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." John 16:13

"Dear children, this is the last hour;
and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour." 1 John 2:18

Satan can't change God but he can twist our view of God if we let him.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves." Matthew 7:15

"The Truth, the Whole Truth; nothing but The Truth"

That is wholly American and originated in the late 1700s. God's Word stands alone. Without the whole truth we have nothing.

"For the word of God
is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

It cuts every tie. There's not a blunt part on it. The tenants of God are still the same. Defy false  prophets -- be active.

"If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,
[a] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed." 1 Timothy 4:6

"He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.” Matthew 13:52

We can't turn a blind eye toward a false prophet. We have to confront when we see this.

And if you have gifts, share them. Be an active worker for Christ.

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

"Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Ephesians 4:15-16

"Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales;rather, train yourself to be godly.
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." 1 Timothy 4:7-8

"Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.
17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own." John 7:16-17

Choose to do the will of God (over and over -- lifelong choice, second by second choice).

"Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son." 2 John 1:9

A sample of Jesus is not enough.

"But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." Titus 3:9

"This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.
10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe." 1 Timothy 4:9-10

Strive continually. Strive means we don't quit. Move. BE a hard target. Emphasizes God's word in your life.

"That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame,
because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day." 2 Timothy 1:12

Use the gifts God has give you.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." James 1:22

God cannot work through us until God is at work within us.

The Sermon on the Plain

Mount vs. Plain:
Beatitudes are written in the 3rd person.
The Sermon on the Plain is written in the 2nd person.

"He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all." Luke 6:17-19

3 types of people present to hear the sermon on the plain:
The 12 apostles

The followers and Believers -- many, many followed Jesus who weren't part of the 12.
And The Multitude -- seeking physical healing and entertainment.

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you." Luke 6:20-22

There were also Gentiles present in the crowd that day too. Tyre and Sidon were Gentile towns.

20 "Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man." Luke 6:20-22

Look at these "people Groups" From Jesus's perspective:

Poverty, Hunger, Sad and Hated. He wasn't saying you should seek to be poor or hungry or sad or hated. He just said if you know you are these apart from Christ you are blessed.

If you don't come empty to Him, He can't fill You. If you don't know you need Him, You can't receive Him.

"“But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets." Luke 6:24-26

Woe to you if you find satisfaction in anythig else but Him. Jesus is the 2-edged Sword.

Whatever stands between you and Jesus, get rid of it!
Rich, well-fed; laughing, spoken well of. What's your great reputation based on?

You can have Jesus or the World. Not both. You should come to Jesus starving for Him..

The context is what makes the difference. Of course we do these things (take care of the weak and voiceless and the poor and widows,,,the vulnerable), but we do it for Jesus.

"The poor you will always have with you,[a] but you will not always have me." Matthew 26:11

"‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'" Revelation 21:4

Have Christ's attitude toward people. He is the reason we do things. There's nothing we need more than Jesus.

What truly separates the world from Believers:

"Blessed are you when people hate you,

when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man." Luke 6:22

"Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets." Luke 6:26

Jesus did it right.

OT Prophets had really hard lives.

Who are you really?

Seek Him. Whose eyes are we looking through? The world's? Jesus's?

Our motivation is the difference.

"Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,
because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets." Luke 6:23

I can never finish seeking Him and Running the race until I get to the finish line (which is Heaven).

Breaking the Chains

We are all bound in some ways, but we don't need to be.

"Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,
    and broke away their chains.
15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
16 for he breaks down gates of bronze
and cuts through bars of iron." Psalm 107:13-16

We all are meant to be free!

"See what great love
the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him." 1 John 3:1

This love is a strange, foreign love to anyone who doesn't know Jesus. We have no way to comprehend it without the Spirit.

5 Steps to Breaking the Chains:

1. Remember who you are. You don't have to give in.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1

2. Rely on God's strength, not your own.

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

3. Fight the lies. Focus on the Truth. Don't deceive yourself. Don't justify sin.

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

4. Be willing to be set free.

Jesus asked the man at the pool of Bethsaida: "Are you willing to be healed?"

Do you want to lose your chains?

5. Leave the chains at the altar. Don't pick them up again.

"For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin--
7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin." Romans 6:6-7

If we grab that sin willingly that is disobedience. Don't let sin become your normal. The norms of the world aren't the norms of God's way of life.

God handles it for me. Walk away from the chains.

If you have a habit that is sin, you need to lose it.

God wants us to be free.

Take your chains to God.
Pray often.
Pray specifically.
Pray for others.

You don't have to do anything alone.  Bring sin to the light. Then, it will lose its power.

"So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists." Acts 12:5-7

God is the same always! What He did for Peter He can do for you, for me.

God wants us to come to Him, pray and believe.

"You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." 1 John 4:4

There is no problem, no chain that God can't overcome for you.
