Prophecy Fulfilled: Immanuel

11/26/2017

322 prophecies in the Old Testament about the birth of Christ -- all came true.

This was not a surprise.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans[b] of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
    from ancient times.” Micah 5:2

Bethlehem was a nothing town, a white spot in the road. It's only claim to fame is that it is was the city of David.

It is no accident. Christ was born in a humble place to humble parents so all would have access to Him.

"Therefore Israel will be abandoned
until the time when she who is in labor bears a son,
and the rest of his brothers return
    to join the Israelites.
4 He will stand and shepherd his flock
in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness
will reach to the ends of the earth.
5 And he will be our peace
when the Assyrians invade our land
    and march through our fortresses.
We will raise against them seven shepherds,
    even eight commanders," Micah 5:3-5

He's not going to rely on military strength but on God alone.

Jesus called Himself The Good Shepherd.

10" Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.”
12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.”
13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also?14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[a] a sign: The virgin[b] will conceive and give birth to a son, and[c] will call him Immanuel.[d] 15 He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste." Isaiah 7:10-16

Asking God for a sign in the right context is just fine. Gideon did and was given one. Do you ask in belief? Do you ask in faith? Are you asking in pride or cyncism? Those will not be answered.

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Jesus is the light of the world for all time.

You have enlarged the nation -- talking about the Kingdom of God.

Dividing the plunder happens after the war is over.

All the sin being lifted off.

9" [a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan--
2 The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
3 You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this." Isaiah 9:1-7

Peace=reconciled with God.

Romans 12: Love

Chapter is full of practical advie on what it means to be a Christian.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

This is a command. Jesus knows He's leaving.  The standard of how we are to love each other is how Jesus loves us.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:1-2

This is what we're here for.

Live with the intent of glorifying God.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world (world thought).

Very rarely do you see good news in the news.

It's very easy to slide into a world view.

Satan loves to stifle our witness.

Transformation is the same word used for a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Two distinct creatures.

"For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." Romans 12:3

When we judge people we're missing the point. Stay humble.

We don't deserve to be here either. My testimony should be look where I was and look where God has brought me.

Each of us has a role to play.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith;
7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." Romans 12:6-8

Have you figured out your role?

All are efforts of love.

Be a living sacrifice.

It takes sacrifice to serve, to teach, to lead, to give.

Teachable moments -- openings.

Making most of the gift by making it who you are.

I'm a Jesus Follower!

Examine ourselves to know who we really are. Where we are.

What is lacking? Self evaluate.

It is easy to coast in our faith.

God wants us to participate.

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." Romans 12:9-10

Our faith can't be just like "how ya doing?"

Church meant to be a growing community.  If it's not growing it's dead.

Be devoted to one another.

Look for opportunities.

Fail forward. Learn from you failings.

Self evaluation isn't comfortable but it's necessary.

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord." Romans 12:11

What's it going to take to get us excited about Jesus?

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality." Romans 12:12-13

These are not suggestions.

"Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another.Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[a] Do not be conceited." Romans 12:14-16

People need you to be with them. They need a Halleluia from you. They need you to be with them emotionally.

"Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Romans 12:17-18

Where are you on the scale of love?

4 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Romans 6

2 "By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." Romans 6:2-4

Baptism is a symbolic act and a public admittance of who we are in Christ.  We can't come to Him without letting go of ourselves.

"Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God." Romans 6:8-10

Death was necessary because of who we are. Resurrection was possible because of who Jesus Christ is.

11 "In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:11-14

Law allowed us to understand our sin. We now fall under grace.

Slaves weren't seen then as they are now. Someone could willingly become a slave if someone would take him on. He would then fall under the master's physical and legal protection.

16 "Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
 Romans 6:16

It's time to choose who your Master is going to be. It's time to choose a side. For or against Jesus. Sin or grace. On God's team or against God's team. Make the commitment.

When I accept Him I am honoring His sacrifice. Christ died once for all.

17" But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.
18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness." Romans 6:17-18

19 "I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.
20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!" Romans 6:19-21

What benefit did you get in and from sin?

Through Christ our sins are forgiven and forgotten (really!).

Go back to your master and admit mistake.

22 "But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God,the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:22-23

If you haven't surrendered yourself completely, you haven't at all. God wants 100% of you.
