"29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord." Exodus 34:29-35
They couldn't handle the glory shining off of Moses's face.
The temple veil (found in Exodus 26:31-33 -- which I will copy and paste below) was 30 feet tall by 30 feet wide. And it was 4 inches thick -- one single piece of fabric!
"37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom." Mark 15:37-38
"51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split." Matthew 27:51
"44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two." Luke 23:44-45
Both Mark and Matthew had Jewish upbringings. Luke did not. Mark and Matthew understood the temple veil being torn from top to bottom was physically impossible for a human to accomplish.
In Jewish tradition a grieving father would tear his garment wide open in grief. This temple veil being ripped apart could be seen as God's own heart breaking for the loss of his son. While Jesus died and became our sin he was separated from the Father. There was real grief.
Jesus was the veil and the High Priest and the Offering. It was his death that gave us a way to the Father:
"10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." Hebrews 10:10-14
"19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water." Hebrews 10:19-22
God's love and Sacrifice:
"He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes[a] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand." Isaiah 53:9-10
God has left the building!:
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else." Acts 17:24-25
Wide-open Door with a Welcome Sign for all:
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[a] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:6-7
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.'" Acts 4:12
