The Blessing and Purpose of Family

7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:71-11

God set the family as an example of His love and the trinity from the beginning.

"21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[a] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[b] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man." Genesis 2:21-24

Back in Jesus' time unmarried sons would stay with family until marriage; and then marriage the husband was responsible for the family.

In the USA:
1860s -- 1 out of 34 marriages ended in divorce.
1900 -- 1 out of 5 marriages ended in divorce
Now -- 1 out of every 2. No difference between Christian and nonchristian marriages.

God knew Adam shouldn't be alone so He gave Adam Eve.

"God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”" Genesis 1:28

And then again in Genesis 9:7 God says the same thing:

"As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”" Genesis 9:7

God' purpose didn't change when He "reset" the world with Noah and Noah's family.

God calls whole families, not just individuals:

He called Abraham:
"So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there." Genesis 12:4-5

He called all of Abraham's ancestors!

The Role of Families:

1. Families are meant to stay together:

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”" Matthew 19:4-6

They will become one flesh. What if everyone had to have their right arms cut off when they divorced??? There would be much fewer divorces.

People who don't have families suffer. The decision to come together in marriage shouldn't be taken lightly.

Children are a blessing from God.

"Children are a heritage from the Lord,

    offspring a reward from him.
4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
    are children born in one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man
    whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
    when they contend with their opponents in court." Psalm 127:3-5

No birth is ever a mistake! God creates every life.

2. Christian Families are an evangelistic tool.

Tool for saving a lost world!

"Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
    who walk in obedience to him.
2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;
    blessings and prosperity will be yours.
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
4 Yes, this will be the blessing
    for the man who fears the Lord." Psalm 128:1-4

3. Family is where we learn to love and nurture.

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself." Ephesians 5:25-28

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”" John 13:35

4. Family is where we learn values and gain character.

"Start children off on the way they should go,
    and even when they are old they will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6

"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates." Deuteronomy 6:6-9

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise-- 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”[a] 4 Fathers,[b] do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:1-4

We learn forgiveness in the family -- how to ask for it and how to give it (so, human parents are ideal -- not perfect parents).

5. Our Family is meant to be an example of God's family.

How could God explaiin His love without the illustration of the family?

"While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”" Matthew 12:46-50

Christian famliies explain the concept of family to others.

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.”" Romans 8;15

Nobody deserves salvation or God's love; but God will give both if we ask. He gives love no matter what. He will give salvation to anyone who asks.

 "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God."
John 1:12-13

We have a perfect Father!

Rest in His Lovingkindness

"Who is a God like you,
    who pardons sin and forgives the transgression
    of the remnant of his inheritance?
You do not stay angry forever
    but delight to show mercy." Micah 7:18

God wants to show us all His lovingkindness.

"Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[a]) 24 So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” 25 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” 27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water." Exodus 15:22-27

But the Israelites grumbled instead. They didn't wait on the Lord. They demanded!

We need to accept God's lovingkindness. We shouldn't hold onto bittterness. Give it to God. Let God take it on. Bitterness will rip you in half. Bitterness will destroy relationships. It will destroy all if we allow it to.

Instead we should choose to have a heart like David.

"I will bow down toward your holy temple
    and will praise your name
    for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
    that it surpasses your fame." Psalm 138:2

"The Lord is good to all;

    he has compassion on all he has made." Psalm 145:9

He had rough stuff going on but David praised God no matter what.

So how do we deal with Bitterness?

#1 Take it to God.

 "You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary

    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you." Psalm 63:1-5

No matterr what happens I will praise God. Praise Him anyway. Go to God with everything.

#2 Forgive like you have been forgiven.

This is a conditional statement. He will forgive us as we have forgiven others.

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:31-32

#3 Rest in God.

"For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”" Psalm 95:10-11

"The
Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands." Joshua 21:44

You can be in battle but still be in God's rest. We need that rest. We remember He is in control. His purpose will prevail. The closer you get to God the more of His peace you will have.

Stop....Pause...Give it to God.

#4 Be confident in the Lovingkindness of God.

 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
 There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4

#5 Spend more and more time in the Word.

Lovingkindness is mentioned in the Bible 149 times.

"The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;

    the righteous run to it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10

You will be safe. I love you. I have only the best of intentions for You.

God can't do anything for you until you give it to Him. Until you come to Him.

"So do not fear, for I am with you;

    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

Don't be dismayed, angry or bitter.

We can't do any of this on our own.

#6 Let it go!

"The Lord is my light and my salvation--
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life--
    of whom shall I be afraid?

2 When the wicked advance against me
    to devour[a] me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident." Psalm 27:1-3

That One Thing

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

The Secret of LIfe -- abundant life is God's peace!
TheCambridge Dictionary defines peace as: "freedom from war and violence, especially when people live and work together happily
without
disagreements"

The Bible offers a different kind of peace -- Shalom -- which means wholeness, health and balance and wholeness in every aspect of life. This is what peace means in the Bible. Psalm 23 is a perfect illustration of Shalom:
"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2     He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3     he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever."

God wants to save us and be with us permanently. That is why He created us! If we have God we have God forever. God already sent Jesus so we could be with Him. What is beyond His capability? Nothing. Nothing but we personally can stop Him from being part of our lives.

"The Lord’s justice will dwell in the desert,
    his righteousness live in the fertile field.
17 The fruit of that righteousness will be peace;
    its effect will be quietness and confidence forever." Isaiah 32:16-17

In the midst of the chaos, look for the Calm One. We need to be the Calm Ones in this world of Chaos. The ones standing in God's confidence and Quietness.

Don't panic. God's presence, God's assurance, God's promises -- when God maeks a promise He keeps it. He fulfills it. Three examples:
"
1.
 "In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence." Ephesians 3:12
2.
 "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ," Romans 5:1
3. "
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—" Ephesians 2:8

All these promises are fulfilled in our lives when we say Yes to Jesus; when we take the hand He is offering us; when we say yes we can't do it without Him; when we say Yes we are sinners, You are God and we choose your forgiveness!

God wants us back in the garden hanging out with Him. We have to choose Jesus to get there.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:4-7

God's peace will guard our hearts and minds. This is a promise. Live in this peace. We are the Children of God. We are bought and paid for. We need to be the Beacons of LIght this dark and hopeless world needs. Please be the light!

Let Freedom Ring!

7/5/2020

"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
John 8:31-36

The American Revolution was started because a tyrant king wouldn't listen to the colonists' pleas. He refused to meet their needs. Civil rights were fought led by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. because government was in a sense a tyrant over part of the population's rights to be free. These two examples are tyrannies of Man.

Jesus fought and won over the Tyranny of Sin.

For this victory to happen in an individual's life he or she must first own up to the fact that Sin reigns in his or her life.

Jesus said in John 8:34, "everyone who sins is a slave to sin."

So what is freedom in Christ?

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[c] And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[e] his Spirit who lives in you." Romans 8:1-11

We can't "fix" our weakness, our slavery to sin. But Christ can and will. God says to us, "I didn't create you to be separated from Me."

We put ourselves in chains. Jesus will take off those chains if we want Him to.

"Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[a] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—" Colossians 1:21-22

Without Jesus we are all murderers. Without Jesus we all are adulterers and thieves and liars.

If there is anything that is separating you from God right now, or if there is anything getting in the way of yoru relationship, get rid of it. IF there is anything you are doing that is causing others to stumble, stop. Freedom is not anarchy. Love your neighbor as yourself, Jesus told us.

"Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak."
1 Corinthians 8:9

"I will walk about in freedom,

    for I have sought out your precepts." Psalm 119:45

Eleven words that mean so much!

We must never surrender to sin slavery again -- if we do this we are loudly proclaiming that Jesus' sacrifice was a waste of time and isn't worth anything.

"This matter arose because some false believers
 had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves." Galatians 2:4

Don't follow anyone into sin. Don't follow anyone into legalism (a form of sin). God is a jealous God.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
 Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1

"Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves." 1 Peter 2:16

"Speak and act as those who are going to be judged
 by the law that gives freedom," James 2:12
