Underdog!

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Matthew 7:13-14

Have you ever felt:

-- unwanted
-- unloved
-- unintelligent
-- un.....

God is bigger than any "un" you might feel.

7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
2 Timothy 1:7

We love underdog stories (check out this year's Kentucky Derby race for an incredible underdog story: Just click here)

We love to hear the underdog stories, but we usually don't like being the underdog. It's uncomfortable and without faith it is the pits!

Paul was an underdog:

15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen." 1 Timothy 1:15-17

And when he got saved the disciples didn't believe him!

Plus, Paul wrote a lot of his letters from prison!

Jesus was the ultimate underdog:
Known as A carpenter's son
Called Illegitimate
Homeless
Not wealthy monetarily
Not from an important family
Just a wandering preacher -- no church
Powerless against the Romans and Pharisees
Not a military leader

But He is who changed the world.

The Message of Christ:

Be the underdog. Be last. Be the servant.

31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” Mark 10:31

Go for what God wants.

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Matthew 7:13-14

Follow the narrow path.

19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me." John 15:19-21

Jesus's way isn't the popular way. Following Jesus means the world will hate you. But hang on Jesus says.

32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:32-34

Go against the world. You're going to be challenged. You will be persecuted. Love, love, love.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

We are working for the kingdom of God. The last will be first.

"You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved." Matthew 10:22

God's will in Christ.

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:6-8

At just the right time! Jesus came at just the right time. He will come again at just the right time. We are living at the just the right time to do Christ's work. The world is spinning out of control. God put us here for His reasons. We're here to do something. Use it for our strength -- the Word of God.

"10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. "11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." John 10:10-11

God wants us to have a full life. Hold on!

"
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”" Joshua 1:9

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

There was Jesus! In the dark spots, in the alleys, He was and is there. God's timing, God's will, God's message:

"The Lord makes firm the steps

    of the one who delights in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,
for the Lord upholds him with his hand." Psalm 37:23-24

God is with us!

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

63 million children have been killed in our country since Roe vs Wade was passed.

Follow God's word and You're good!

Don't forget.

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:8-9

People are suffering. Between now and then do God's work. We can overcome the world, sin and death because Jesus already has!

Faith is an action

5/1/2022

"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." James 2:14-17

If God tells you to do something and you don't do it, it's sin. If God tells you something and you make excuses you aren't following Jesus.

"If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them." James 4:17

The example has been given in Jesus Christ.

"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." John 13:15

Jesus went and found the people who needed healing, who needed saving. He kept on healing, kept on preaching, kept on forgiving no matter the reaction he got from others.

Have a servant heart

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Colossians 3:23-24

Everything we do should lead to this way of life (in above verses). We can't "sell" Christianity with earthly rewards. Jesus doesn't promise these. But the life is rewarding -- it is abundant life! Rewards for following Christ in deeds:

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life." 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Everyone of us are wealthy. We are doing really well compared to most people in the world. Put your hope in God, not in riches. The abundant life is living the life of Christ right now.

The day is coming:

"'When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’"
Matthew 25:31-40

The deciding factor is what they DID for Jesus. Don't just think or wish -- DO! When you don't do it to others, you aren't doing it for Jesus. How can we claim we know Christ if we don't live as He calls us to live?

Actions and Truth

"
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:18

Pray for people right now. We have to put our hands on people -- get real, get honest, do, do, do.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith;
7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." Romans 12:6-8

Everyone has gifts. Use them for the kingdom of God. Use what you've been given.

WARNING:

There is danger in inactivity. You can defend really well but you'll never win just defending. Unless you go on the offensive you will never gain, never win.

"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." James 2:26

Is your faith dead?

"They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good." Titus 1:16

"With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him." Daniel 11:32

Defense and offense. We have to be moving out -- moving forward. Step out. Do. We have no excuse to have faith without action.

 “‘If you can’?”
said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Mark 9:23

"He replied,
“Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”" Matthew 17:20

Do! You're strong enough!
Pray knowing God is listening and working. Do the work. Our faith has to be a verb in our lives. This is what we are meant to do.

Evaluate yourself -- work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

What if Jesus asks you, "What did you do for me?"

Even the demonws know who Jesus is but that's not faith. Faith without action is worthless. Be engaged wholly.

In Times Like These

"Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains." Matthew 24:4-8

Strife and conflict and famine, all over the world: Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia, Afghanistan, North Korea, Iran bombing the U.S. embassy in Iraq; God calls us to be people like David -- people after God's own heart.

"But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”" 1 Samuel 13:14

22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’" Acts 13:22

We serve a risen Savior!

Who was David?

A Shepherd:
"He chose David his servant

    and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep he brought him
to be the shepherd of his people Jacob,
    of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;
with skillful hands he led them." Psalm 78:70-72

A warrior:
He fought 66 battles. In each one he and his army were the little guys. He didn't lose one battle. He won them all. The world can look like it is winning. But it isn't. David never denied God. Never. And when he was confronted with his sin, he repented.

A child:
"1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?

3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me." Psalm 13

He was a child who asked his Father questions. Came to his Father God with all things. He pleads with God for help. He praised God for God. He didn't blame God when things were bad. He praised God. The whole world is negative -- don't get stuck in that. Praise God. The world needs to see us praising God.

Our Battles:
Get read before the battle comes. Always be in training with your weapons -- the Bible and prayer. Train, train, train.

"12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 6:12

How do we participate in the fight? in the war?

1. Be in prayer!
2. Speak boldly for Jesus.

"The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." 2 Corinthians 10:4

We have the power. The world doesn't. There is a reason we have prayer lists.

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”" John 18:36

We approach with confidence!

16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16

What are we to do?

"Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the l ight and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

Our instructions are in 16-18. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.

David's psalms of help

H -- hear
E -- establish
L -- Let
P -- preserve

"Hear me oh LORD, for I am poor and needy." Psalm 86:1

Establish my footsteps according to your word so no sin rule over me." Psalm 119:133

Let your mercy come quickly to meet us for we are in desperate need." Psalm 79:8b

Preserve my God for I take refuge in you." Psalm 16:1

Where is the witness?

2/27/2022

In Acts 3 Peter and John are used by God to heal a man who was lame from birth. As a result of this miracle they were given a platform to speak from. And this is the response from the people:

"The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand." Acts 4:1-4

Standing Firm in what they Believe. Sharing what they know
This led the authorities to question them. This again gave them an opportunity to speak  the truth:

"7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed." Acts 4:7-10

The more Peter was challenged, the bolder he became.

"18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.'" Acts 4:18-20

Still standing!

"12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed." Acts 5:12-16

The stronger the testimony, the greater the miracles. More and more people believed. All were healed.

"17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out." Acts 5:17-19

They would rather keep their power then let God in! God told Peter and John to do it again!

Who Will You Obey?

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” Acts 5:29-32

When you are a witness in court you will be attacked by the opposing side. Expect to be attacked. use a challenge to grow bolder and bolder.

In the World Today:

13 Christians are murdered daily.
12 Churches are attacked daily.
12 Christians are unjustly arrested and imprisoned daily.
1 in 6 Christians in Africa are persecuted.
2 in 5 Christians in Asia are persecuted.

Persecution makes us bolder and stronger. A lot of prayer went into the founding of the United States. Where are we today?
18% of all pregnancies end in abortion. That is almost 1 in 5!
Rampant sexual immorality
Apathy in and outside the church
Where are we Believers when all this is going on?
We should be much more than we are. We have let our country down.

Are we standing firm?

"19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

When you buy a tractor for your ranch you expect it to do the work it needs to do. You would be mighty upset if it didn't work. God bought us with a very high price -- the price of His Son's life. What are we doing with our lives? What are we using our bodies for?

"9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord." Romans 12:9-11

Make Noise

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:8-10

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58

Be strong!

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Ephesians 6:10-13

Put on your armor and get to work. Don't try to find a way out. Find a way to use your armor and the Word more effectively.

Be a prayer warrior

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should." Ephesians 6:18-20

A Glimpse of Heaven

11/28/2021

If you intend to go on vacation you do a lot of planning: what you will wear; the weather; buy tickets; talk about your vacation enthusiastically very likely; look forward to it daily until you go. We need to do this with our eternal destination -- heaven!

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1

They are two separate places.

"Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.
Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them." Hebrews 11:16

We all long for heaven. This is our true home.

God gave us a travel brochure -- the Word of God.

"22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life." Revelation 21:22-27

"Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him." Revelation 22:1-3

How to set your travel plans:

"25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”" John 11:25-26

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.' Romans 10:9-10

Gotta have your ticket -- Jesus Christ.

Longing for Heaven

11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." Ecclesiastes 3:11

2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is." 1 John 3:2

The Way Home

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me.
2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14:1-4

It will be al set up for you -- your home in heaven. You have to go through the Door.

Living Today for Heaven

33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:33-34

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you," 1 Peter 1:3-4

We need to act now as the people we are:

20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body." Philippians 3;20-21

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40

One on One with Jesus

He didn't need us but we need Him.

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them." John 14:23

You can't do this collectively. You have to meet Jesus yourself and have a relationship with Him.

Are you looking to get to know Jesus better than you do?

"3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
John 17:3

If you know Jesus, you know the Father.

"6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
John 14:6

"15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you." John 15:15

Read the Word, listen and let the Spirit guide you.

One on One with Christian brothers and sisters
We need to get involved and engaged with each other.

"11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:11

"A friend loves at all times,

and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Proverbs 17:17

"Though one may be overpowered,

    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Ecclesiastes 4:12

There will be suffering. The world will overcome us if we don't have Jesus. With Jesus we can overcome the world.

One on One with the Lost

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." Ephesians 4:2-3

Look at Jesus's example with: Zacchaeus, the paralytic, the woman at the well and Peter.

And Jesus physically touched people when he didn't have to: Peter's mother, the lepers, the blind -- The untouchables were touched by Jesus.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

"12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." John 14:12

Follow the steps of Jesus

"21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps." 1 Peter 2:21

"15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," 1 Peter 3:15

Do life as Jesus does. If you have received, give. If you received give it. How much did Jesus give for me? Sacrifice yourself for others always. Be last.

"Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:1-4

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate." Luke 15:17-24

The father took his son back -- didn't tell him to clean himself up before the robe was put on him. The father didn't yell at him for squandering the money. The father didn't ask for the prodigal son to even say sorry. He just took him back. God takes us back the same way. God takes us back in the condition He finds us in. After the relationship is there then God works with us to become who He created us to be.

Why did Jesus tell this parable?

"Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Luke 15:1-2

He was responding to the Pharisees and teachers grumbling about Him loving and welcoming unsavory people into His presence. Jesus is showing them the way God works with us.

Who are we?

"We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. 3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” Romans 15:1-3

We have an obligation to bear with the failings of others -- God did this with us (and continues to). Why would we act any differently?

Ask yourself: Am I acting like a pharisee or like Jesus?

Who are we to judge?

"Lord, hear my prayer,
    listen to my cry for mercy;
in your faithfulness and righteousness
    come to my relief.
2 Do not bring your servant into judgment,
for no one living is righteous before you." Psalm 143:1-2

"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" Matthew 7:3

Sin is sin is sin.

The Order of Things.

In Luke 19 Jesus calls up to Zacchaeus and says he is going to eat at Zacchaeus's house. We are called first. We accept and the relationship begins. And then after that comes the change. God brings about the change in us -- not we ourselves. Our responsibility is to open the door and let them in (as a church).

Change comes after the relationship

Is that not the blueprint that Jesus gave us?

Not ready but willing -- that is an individual's responsibility -- to be willing to receive Jesus. We need to be a safe haven for all who are broken -- the church needs to be that safe haven. Are we a church with open doors?

"For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope." Romans 15:4

Equation for Salvation:

Come as you are + Jesus = Salvation.
Endurance + Scriptures = Hope.

Day to day we walk. We pick up our cross daily.

This is the example of Jesus.

"For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God." Romans 15:4-7

Do what you can within your sphere of influence. We Believers need to be the ones to make the change.

A Church family of hope.

Our hope likes in the promises of Jesus.
Where there is hope, there is life.
Open the doors of the church. Open the arms of your heart. There is no better place, no better people, no better time than now.

Redwood trees grow to 300 feet tall, taller than the Statue of Liberty! And some are 2500 years old!

They are massive. But they can't survive on their own because their roots are shallow.

Picture

They survive because their roots intertwine -- the trees support each other.

"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Acts 2:42-47

This is an example of the first church. Church was made up of Believers of all different walks of life. Prior to this, worship at the Jewish synagogue was about The Jewish people worshiping God. The church excludes no one.  A totally new concept at the time! The Jewish religion had a high priest -- the church no longer needed one because Jesus is the high priest and we are all called to be priests of God. The Jewish religion excluded gentiles. The Church welcomes everyone.

The church was at the center of the Believers' lives. Today, we have lost that and churches are dying.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,
25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:24-25

We gotta stay together. We need each other.

"We are unified by our common weaknesses, our common failures and our common disappointments and our common inconsistencies." Henri Nouwen

The New Testament Church:

1. Everyone baptized in the Spirit -- had Received the Spirit.

"When the day of Pentecost
came, they were all together in one place." Acts 2:1

2. Accepted the Message of Jesus.

"Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day." Acts 2:41

3. Devoted to Teaching and Fellowship.

"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching
and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42

It wasn't until the 1500s that we had Bibles. Medieval churches might have had one book of the Bible.

Why we need each other in the Church:

Strength: There is strength in numbers. We give each other strength. We encourage each other.

"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A
cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Ecclesiastes 4:12

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:11

When those storms come we will fail of we try to stand alone, stay isolate.d

The worst a Christian wil experience is this life. The best nonbelievers will experience is this life. This is the hardest we will ever have it.

"And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven." james 5;15

And we can pray for each other.

"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2

And we can lean on each other.

Ministry: Each one of us has been tasked with the Great Commission:

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”" Matthew 28:19-20

Jesus said GO! This is not a suggestion.

"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,
12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up" Ephesians 4:11-12

We are equipped to go. We are not meant to just absorb and be entertained. Each of us is called to be Jesus's hands and feet. They were learning and studying so they could teach others.

Worship: corporate worship -- necessary for us.

"speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,
20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:19-20

"But you are a chosen people,
a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9

Discipleship: We each are growing or dying -- those are the only two options. Stagnation is dying.

"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts." Colossians 3:16

We learn from each other.

"And the things you have heard me say
in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others." 2 Timothy 2:2

We need to be growing leaders from among us.

Represent the family of God to the world.

See God in action through us! Through our church!

"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer
to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," 1 Peter 3:15

"Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,
but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household," Ephesians 2:19

Therefore:

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality." Romans 12:10-13

This is what we are supposed to do!

A lot of pastors burn out -- most don't even last 3 years. We need to feed each other's fire. Let us then be a church of:

LOVE!
"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." John 15:12
FAITH!
"This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome," 1 John 5:2-3
ACTION!
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" Mathew 25:40

If we aren't doing then we aren't following. Love the least of these.

It's About Time

"11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him." Ecclesiastes 3:11-14

King Solomon wrote this as he looked back at his life.
-- The work we do is a gift of God!
-- We don't endure forever -- our lives on this earth are finite.

Time is Fleeting.

"13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”
14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”" James 4:13-15

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting my life is.
5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
    even those who seem secure.[a]
6 “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
without knowing whose it will finally be." Psalm 39:4-6

Time is short for us.

God only knows the time we have.

"Our days may come to seventy years,
    or eighty, if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away." Psalm 90:10

"Teach us to number our days,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12

We have a limited amount of time. Make each day important. When you number something it's important. Each day, each year, each hour is important. Our days are important. If we don't make the most of each one we lose it. Each breath, each second can be a offering to God.

Time is a Blessing.

"8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:8-9

God wants us to live as much as we can -- see as many souls saved as we can. Now, now, now -- is what we humans think. God's timing is perfect! When we think it isn't, we are arrogant and so very wrong. God has grace and mercy -- He doesn't want to lose anyone. Time is a blessing -- another opportunity to love and share.

Time will end.

"
For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.
6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains." Matthew 24:5-8

Don't focus on things happening around us. Focus on Jesus and loving people for Jesus.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’" Matthew 25:31-36

Don't be caught off guard not watching.

If someone important was planning on showing up at your house you would prepare and watch. How much more should we do this for Jesus.

"41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’"Matthew 25:41-45

Time is Ticking.

"Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape."
1 Thessalonians 5:1-3

The clock is ticking on every human life.

The Urgency of Time -- Be Intentional.

"15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is." Ephesians 5:15-17

Live it with drive, with intention. Live for Jesus. Love God will all of yourself. Love everyone wholly. Love on each other. Be wise. Make the most of every opportunity to love. Nobody is going to care what you did at the end. They want to know if they are loved. They need to know Jesus and believe in Him.

"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity." Colossians 4:5

If You knew, what would you do?

"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity." Galatians 6:10

Am I living intentionally for Jesus? There will be no do-overs when we stand before Jesus.

What does God want you to do?

"As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work."
John 9:4

We have limited time and limited opportunity.

The Day is Coming.

"31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left." Matthew 25:31-33

At the end we will be separated by what we did for Jesus.

"41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’" Matthew 25:41-45

You did not do what you were supposed to do.

What have you done with the time You have been given?

What are we waiting for?

All you gotta do is get moving.

"36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”"
Matthew 12:36-37

Let's see what you did for me.

"Empty words."

"So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God." Romans 14:12

What matters is what I did with my life for Jesus.

If you choose NOT to do what is right that is a sin: a sin of omission.

We deserve nothing. He gave us everything.
We deserve hell. He offers heaven.

Time is short.

What is your superpower?

2/21/2021

Superheroes have back stories -- who they were before they became superheroes.

God has given us  our own "superpowers."

Superhero qualities:

--sacrifices their life in a selfless way.
--Inspires people; gives them hope.
--Helps others expecting nothing in return.
--Is brave and courageous.
--they have something other people don't have.

A superhero is a servant:

"Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35

"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all." Mark 10:43-44

We are to be servants all the time.

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”" Mark 10:45

Jesus passed on His "superpowers" -- His gifts.

We each have been given a superpower by grace, to help in the resistance of evil. He wants us to participate.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith;
7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." Romans 12:6-8

Find your superpower! In a way He wants us to be like the Justice League -- we each have our own job to do. Without one of us doing our job there will be something going undone.

More Superpowers:

"To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines." 1 Corinthians 12:8-11

Someone got us to where we are by the power of the Spirit. We need to run with it. Help others along the path.

We don't want to be Couch Potato Thor! Fat Thor!

Even more superpowers:

"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." Ephesians 4:11-13

Everyone has a role to play. Each of us has a role to play in the church. Talents have to be refined and polished. It takes a lot of work to refine and polish a talent. Work hard at it. Practice. Satan and the world can't steal your salvation but they can steal your ministry.

Common theme of Superheroes: they serve their communities.

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work." 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Be involved. We are meant to do our part. Our mission -- to fight the evil of the world. Become that new creature We were made into when we accepted Christ Jesus. When the superhero became the superhero the old person was gone. He/She became a totally different person/creature. 100% change.

Manifesting the gifts -- manifesting the Spirit:

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2

Using superpowers for personal gain is selfish -- this is the world's way.

As a church -- are we using our gifts?

Scientists have found out there are 26 lakes under the Sahara Desert! Yet people are dying of thirst there because they aren't accessing the water.

A lot of people want to serve God in an advisory role. God doesn't have or need advisors. If we has sa church disappeared tomorrow, would people miss us? We must be the salt and light.

"For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,
5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith;" Romans 12:4-6

We've been given great gifts. With great power comes great responsibility. Spiderman stole that from the Bible!

"But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." Luke 12:48

"Very truly I tell you, whoever believes
in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." John 14:12

Wow!! More than what Jesus did while on earth -- this is a promise! A truth!

"If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing." 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Whatever we do, we must do with love -- loving God and people. If not done in love, if the gifts aren't used in love, what we do is useless. Less than useless!

Are we doing what God wants us to do?
