Stressed out? Refill your cup

"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing." Psalm 23:1

We forget all that we have when we're stressed.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
 who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." Ephesians 1:3

    "He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,
3     he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake." Psalm 23:2-3

There are two different kinds of green grass in the Middle East: goat grass and lush green grass. Goat grass will kill a sheep within 24 hours after a sheep eats it. The shepherd makes sure we are being nourished rather than poisoned.

"He says, 'Be still, and know that I am God;

    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.'" Psalm 46:10

Sheep won't drink out of running water. They fear drowning. So sometimes the shepherd would alter the water so the sheep would drink from it (like create a small dam to make a pool).

"On the last and greatest day of the festival,
 Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink." John 7:37

"but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'" John 4:14

"he refreshes my soul." Psalm 23:3a

He has given us the Holy Spirit. Refreshment will come through the Spirit.

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever" John 14:16

The Holy Spirit is our Advocate (another word for Lawyer).

"But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." John 16:7

 "he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me." Psalm 23:3-4

Sheep are scared of everything.Sheep won't take care of themselves.

"I lie down and sleep;

    I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
    assail me on every side." Psalm 3:5-6

"Those who know your name trust in you,

    for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you." Psalm 9:10

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

    but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." Psalm 20:7

We cannot overcome anything on our own!

"You prepare a table before me

    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows." Psalm 23:5

God takes care of it in the midst of anything!

Nothing is more secure than trusting God has your back. He does!

When we're stressed out we forget all the blessings we have. Light always wins over darkness.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;
 do not be discouraged,for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

"my cup overflows." Psalm 23:5c

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peaceas you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13

 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

The Greatest Story Ever Told

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His [a]only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16

Foundational.

Martin Luther called it, "The minature gospel."

Makes Satan shudder.

Lights pathway to heaven.

Let's break it down.

"FOR GOD"

In the beginning
God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1

"The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

They are corrupt, they have committed abominable [a]deeds;
There is no one who does good." Psalm 14:1

God exists.  There's no way not to see God. How can there be a creation without a Creator?

"SO LOVED"

Love is mentioned 56 times in the book of John.  Our imagination can't comprehend His love.

"GOD LOVED"

 “The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples,8 but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lordbrought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of [a]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt." Deuteronomy 7:7-8

God's love began before time and will last after time.  A sinner cannot go to hell unloved.

"THE WORLD"

The world means people.  God loves everyone -- no qualifications, no limitations. There is no one God hasn't loved.

"THAT HE GAVE"  giving with sacrifice; Himself -- His Son -- All He had.

Difference between our giving and His giving. He gave of Himself, gave all He had.

"THAT WHOSOEVER"

"for all
[a]have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," Romans 3:23

Whosoever means me -- you -- us.  Everyone's given this offer. God wants you.

"BELIEVES"

Nicodemus

"Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born [a]again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

No one can see the kingdom of God without being born again.  Every can have it.

"He saved us,
not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit," Titus 3:5

"IN HIM"

"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12

"He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life." 1 John 5:12

Without Jesus we have nothing.

" *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." John 14:6

"SHALL NOT PERISH"

Noah--Lot--First Born--Rahab

Heaven to gain.

We weren't cretaed to be expendable.

We are travelers in this foreign land. When you come to the Father I'll give you everything.

"ETERNAL LIFE"

"Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies," John 11:25

"In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men." John 1:4

"to whom
God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Colossians 1:27

God paid what was necessary to redeem Me! He wants me. He wants all of us back. God doesn't put strings on His offer. Believe in Him.

Celebration and Preparation

"In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
 Luke 1:26-38

Jesus was born in very obscure circumstances.

No one at the time grasped the concept of how lowly is birth woul be.

At the time Bethlehem wasn't even on the map.

Oftentimes God chooses the least, the weak, the ordinary, the unremarkable to do His work.

He chose a young teenage girl who was unmarried. God chooses things peoplee typically don't.

"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." 1 Corinthians 1:27

Favor=graced.

Don't worry what the Word says. God picked her.

God told Mary -- I've got a job for you.

Jesus was a common name (like Jimmy or Bob or Mike now).

Jesus means "Jehovah is salvation."

"For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth;

    you are exalted far above all gods." Psalm 97:9

This clicked with Mary (see Luke 1:32)

400 years since there's been a king on the throne. Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah.

We can't make something out of nothing. But God can and He does it all the time!

God doesn't give Mary all the details (He rarely does this with us).

The Greatest Miracle is John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

The biggest miracle is how much God loves us!! There are three responses to this miracle:
1. People can deny it.
2. People can twist it.
3. People can accept it. Mary did this and said, "Your will be done."

Jesus will be reinstalled on the throne!

"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first." 1 Thessalonians 4:16

The King is coming!!
