Passover

First blood sacrifice in the Bible happened in Genesis 3:

21 "The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them." Genesis 3:21

And then in the end:
"13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”
14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”
And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." Revelation 7:13-14

I. The Lamb was needed.

Blood on the doorway -- Everyone needed to be covered by the blood because everyone has sinned. The angel of death was coming. If you don't follow through with God's commands of putting blood on the door, your child would die.

"3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”"
John 3:3

II. The Lamb is chosen.

The lamb was chosen on day 10 (see Exodus 12) and taken home and not sacrificed till day 14. Kids probably got quite attached.

8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.[a]" revelation 13:8

4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[a]" Galatians 4:4-5

God sent Jesus at the perfect time. The Romans were in charge and built roads everywhere. There was a common language -- Greek. The language, the roads were all there so the gospel could be spread! Fullness of God's time!!

III. The Lamb was watched.

the kids would watch the lamb these four days. The people and the Pharisees watched Jesus.

4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[a]" Luke 6:7

IV. The Lamb is slaughtered.

Jesus was chosen. His purpose was to die, to be the sacrifice for all sin. A blood sacrifice. His blood is on all our hands.

23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross." Acts 2:23

IV. Blood applied.

Killing the lamb was not enough. The blood had to be applied to the door frame -- above, right and left and below. Just like the cross: the crown of thorns, the nails on the right, the left and below. Jesus is the Door to Heaven.

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture." John 10:7-9

The blood had to be applied by faith. Used hyssop to apply it -- everyone had to do it. Hyssop was a common shrub. All had to pick some to apply the blood. Leveled the playing field.

V. The Lamb was eaten.

The lamb had to be eaten by the family. We have to ingest Jesus's flesh and blood. He is the bread from heaven. He has to be part of us. Blood=salvation Flesh=regeneration.

"Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." John 6:53

Eaten with the Lamb was bitter herbs which represented Egypt and slavery. Bread without yeast -- hurry!

7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

You had to be dressed and ready.

Are you ready?

The LORD's supper:

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” John 6:53-58

Cleaning up our diet

25 "When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” John 6:25-28

Jesus says this to the people right after he had fed the 5000 with the loaves and fishes. He had just fed a bunch of hungry people who now were seeking him out for more of the bread he gave them.

"not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” John 6:27

Jewish Tradition-- you work for your food.

Jesus told them to work for something that wouldn't spoil.

"Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[a]" John 6:28-31

They're going to challenge Jesus Biblically.

It's not about the physical but the spiritual.

32 "Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:32-33

You can't earn it.

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:34-35

Dangerous to us -- junk food (the spiritual kind).

4 "Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[a]” Matthew 4:4

If someone is missing God they will fill that hole with "toys" and activities that keep them busy: job, hobbies, entertainment, etc.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Fill life with something that's sustaining.  Eat good food and know what you're eating.  Live on the Word of God.  Soul nourishment should be our fuel.

The Lord's Prayer -- come to God daily for provision, for the Word of God.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

"He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God." Revelation 19:13

"Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35

We need to have daily sustenance -- every day your soul is hungry for God's word.

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

Go back for fresh "food" daily.

"I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." John 6:51

Living, sustaining, constant.

“Come, all you who are thirsty,

    come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
    come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost. Isaiah 55:1

You don't need to do anything but come and get it!

You have to plan for it with intention.  Diets and habits don't happen accidentally. We need to to treat our soul food the same way as we approach a physical diet.

If we don't write it down, we won't know what we're doing.  Plan for it. Work for it. Look at your life. Get spiritually nourished. Get someone to hold you accountable.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good;

blessed is the one who takes refuge in him." Psalm 34:8

The Word of God needs to be inside us. Do I want to look like the rest of the world?

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace
as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13

(Somehow Jane's name got on the sermon recordings on Youtube. She's trying to fix it. It is still Shannon preaching!)

Three Truths

1/21/2018

26"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Matthew 26:26-29

Jesus's death was necessary.

"In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." Hebrews 9:22

"God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,
[a] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished" Romans 3:25

Jesus's sacrifice means we can have a personal relationship with God. Also means we can one day walk with Him in heaven.

"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit." 1 Peter 3:18

Jesus died for this opportunity.

1 Cross + 3 nails = 4Given!

Our faith has to be based on the right thing -- Jesus.

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day." John 6:54

When your faith is based on Jesus you will be raised in the end.

Jesus provides salvation only if it is a faith we can't do without.

'For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." Romans 12:3

The 2nd "last supper" is called The Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

"Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing watersand like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
“Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.” Revelation 19:6-9

The disciples understood what Jesus was doing when He offered them the cup. It was the picture of what happens between a young couple getting engaged. When the man of the couple offers the woman the cup of wine it means he is offering her himself, his entire life, his all. She has the choice of whether or not to accept the  cup even though negotiations and contracts have been drawn up. She has freewill. When she accepts the cup she is saying my life is yours. I am dedicated to you. You are my future.

When we accept  Christ's cup, his blood, we are saying we are His. We are dedicated to Him.

Do we accept the cup?

When Jesus handed them the bread and the cup He was offering everything.

1. Have you asked for forgiveness?

2.  Are you living your life in a way that honors Jesus's sacrifice?

3. When Christ returns and we're at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb will we see people there we've shared the good news with?

I don't want anyone to be missing.

We live with the consequences of our decision.

Bread

3/19/2017

Ezekiel called bread the staff of life.

The U.S. population spent 23.6 billion dollars on bread in 2016.

50% of Americans eat a sandwich daily.

Genesis 3:19a "By the sweat of your brow you will eat bread."

That is the first time bread is mentioned in the Bible.

Jesus and the 40 days in the desert.

Bread and Water -- prison food.

Daily bread.

Parable about "even the dogs eat the crumbs off the children's table."

Tradition tells us they'd save the crust of the bread to wipe their fingers on and give these scraps to the dogs.

Offerings.

Wave Offering -- bread they made from the first grain from the harvest.

Abigail -- gave a huge offering of bread (and other things) to David to cover her husband's guilt.

Luke 9:10-17.

They had a little bit, but when it was broken and shared it fed everyone. And there were tons of leftovers.

The more you give away, the more comes back.

The more our gifts will expand.

Just do it. Don't worry -- just do it.

John 6:26-40. Jesus calls Himself the "bread of life."

You should be hungry for the Word of God.

Walk by faith means stepping out. Step off that ledge. The disciples delivered the bread and fish.

Matthew 26:26 Jesus is the bread.

breaking of bread means sharing.

Acts 2:46. Continued to break bread together.

1 Corinthians 10:17, "Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread."

To put it together, we all need to be actively involved.
