Compare this parable to The Great Commission -- the last thing Jesus said to his followers before leaving earth:
"18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”" Matthew 28:18-20
The Great Commission was given to all of us.
Step #1 -- SEE the need.
"But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him."
Luke 10:33
"35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." John 4:35
"3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4
Jesus never had a salary or a house. He just walked around talking about God. His eyes were open to the needs of others.
Step #2 -- COMPASSION.
"33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him."
Luke 10:33
When you see a need and you know you have the answer/solution, then do it.
"34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things."
He saw them, felt compassion for them and acted on this -- gave them what they needed.
It's easy to grow callous when you are confronted by tons of need. Pry off that callous on your heart. Break up your fallow ground so you can truly see and feel and do.
"17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?" 1 John 3:17
If you see your brother or sister in need and you can help but don't, this is wrong.
Step #3 -- Get your hands busy.
34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him." Luke 10:34
The Good Samaritan went to him, took care of him. The wine back then was used as an antiseptic -- it would clear out the crud, the beginning of infection. And the oil would sooth the wound and seal it so no infection could enter the would. Jesus's blood cleanses us and the Holy Spirit seals us, anoints us, keeping us from corruption.
Step #4 -- Follow through.
34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him." Luke 10:34
"14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[a]" Romans 10:14-15
Step #5 Continue to Care.
35 The next day he took out two denarii[a] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’" Luke 10:35
"17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!"
2 Corinthians 5:17
A new Believer needs checking up on; they need accountability; encouragement.
Evangelism is just the beginning -- you need to be part of the entire process -- the growth of the Believer.
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27
APPLICATION:
"15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15
Learn how to use the Word of God.
5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry." 2 Timothy 4:5
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2;10
Do the work God calls you to do. Go!
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
